Example searches

Below are a few examples to show you how the search engine works. When you click Fill form for me, the data that needs to be entered or selected for the search will be automatically entered in the Advanced Search from on the right-hand side. Have a close look at what has been selected or entered to understand what is happening. Then click the Search and map button at the bottom to see the result.

Example 1: Show me all languages where cross-cousins on the mother's and on the father's side are called the same way: Fill form for me

Example 2: Show me all languages that have been reported to have a section system or a subsection system: Fill form for me

Example 3: Show me all languages that have been reported to have a section system and a subsection system: Fill form for me

Example 4: Show me all languages that have been reported to have section systems and a prescribed first cross-cousin marriage Fill form for me

Example 5: Show me all languages that know a similar form to kaparli as a kinship word and that call Mother's Mothers with the same word as Daughter's Daughters Fill form for me

If you select and, then only those languages that satisfy all search conditions will be shown.

For example: if you select FF and MF, then the search engine will show all languages where the word for Father's Father and Mother's Father are identical.

Search social category systems

The search engine will show all languages for which the systems you select below have been reported. Multiple selections are allowed. Hold the shift-key or control/command-key while selecting.

Search by marriage rules

The search engine will show all languages for which the types or rules of marriage you select below have been reported. Multiple selections are allowed. Hold the shift-key or control/command-key while selecting.
